The Tesla Model Y made its debut at the annual Tesla shareholder meeting when CEO Elon Musk teased an image of the upcoming crossover.
Musk said,” I’m really excited about Model Y. You know there’s been criticism like, ’We should, sort of, derive from the Model 3 platform,’ but I think we made a mistake in trying to derive the Model X from the Model S platform. It would have been better to design an SUV the way an SUV should be designed – design a sedan the way a sedan should be designed. Otherwise, you are just trying to shoehorn something in that doesn’t make sense.”
The Model Y is the SUV equivalent of the Model 3 sedan just as the Model X is equivalent to the Model S. Musk indicated that the price would start somewhere around $35,000 (around 22.5 lakhs). The teaser images do not tell much about the Model Y but it can be seen that the SUV has no rear-view mirrors. This can bring a big change in the automotive world if Tesla succeeds in replacing the exterior mirrors with some technology. This also leads to improvise the aerodynamics of the vehicle. It could be possible that Tesla is planning to use camera-based guidance system. Musk hinted that people should watch the Tesla semi unveiling to get more information about the Model Y.
